Weekly Update: 2/5/21 Black Liberation Movements

Black History Month – Black Liberation Movements
This month on the blog, we are using the framework from Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance) to explore Black history in America. Learning for Justice advocates for schools and parents to teach a complete history. Over the next four weeks, Learning for Justice will be focusing on the following:

Teaching History of Black Liberation Movements
Honoring Black Civic Engagement
Recognizing Intersectional Black Identity
Celebrating Black Literature

In this first week, we’ll look at Black liberation movements. When considering Black liberation, it’s important to think beyond defeating slavery and Jim Crow. Below are some resources for further exploration:

Teaching Tolerance is now Learning for Justice
Frequent readers of this blog will know that we reference the Teaching Tolerance website nearly every week. It is a great place to start whenever you are looking for an article or a framework or just aren’t sure how to explore a topic related to social justice. Recently, they hired a new director and changed the name to Learning for Justice. You can read more about it here. The new name better describes their work and their mission to support action address injustice.
